Cocktail Glass Care 101: Dishwasher-Safe, Storage, and Keeping Glassware Looking Sharp

Good glassware is a real investment, even at accessible prices — a little care makes it last years instead of months.

TL;DR:

  • Every Quality Barware glass is dishwasher safe - the Whiskey Flight Paddle’s wood base is the one hand-wash-only exception.

  • Space glasses apart in the dishwasher; touching is the #1 cause of chips.

  • Cloudiness is usually hard water, not damage - a vinegar soak fixes it.

  • Store glasses upright, and give stemmed glasses a little breathing room.

Yes, it's dishwasher safe

All of our glassware is dishwasher safe, so you don't need to hand-wash it out of fear of cracking it. That said, a few habits help it last and stay clear longer.

One real exception, from actually running this shop myself: the Whiskey Flight Paddle's chalkboard base isn't dishwasher safe — the four tulip glasses in it are, but the wood base needs a hand-wipe only. I've seen a base warp from going through a cycle it wasn't built for, so if you've got one of those sets, pull the base out and just wipe it down.

Load it so it doesn't touch

Glasses that knock against each other in the dishwasher are the most common cause of chips and cracks — space them so they're not touching, and use the top rack, which is gentler and farther from direct heat.

Watch for cloudiness

Cloudy glassware is usually hard water mineral buildup, not damage. A short soak in equal parts white vinegar and warm water, then a regular wash, clears it up on most glasses. Avoid extreme temperature swings — pulling a glass straight from a hot dishwasher into cold water (or vice versa) is one of the few things that can actually crack quality glass.

“A sudden hot-to-cold swing is one of the few things that can actually crack quality glass.”

Storing it right

Store glasses upright, not upside down on an open shelf — resting on the rim for long periods can create tiny stress points over time. Give stemmed glasses a little breathing room so they're not wedged tightly next to each other.

The actual answer

Dishwasher-safe means you can relax about daily use — just give glasses a little space in the wash and store them upright, and they'll hold up for years.

FAQ

Is all Quality Barware glassware dishwasher safe?

Yes - every glass we sell is dishwasher safe. The one exception is the wood chalkboard base on the Whiskey Flight Paddle set; the four glasses in it are dishwasher safe, the base is hand-wipe only.

Why does my glassware look cloudy after washing?

Almost always hard water mineral buildup, not damage. Soak it in equal parts white vinegar and warm water, then run it through a normal wash.

What actually causes chips and cracks?

Glasses knocking against each other in the dishwasher is the most common cause. Space them so they’re not touching and use the top rack.

Can I go straight from a hot dishwasher to cold water?

Don’t. A sudden hot-to-cold (or cold-to-hot) swing is one of the few things that can actually crack quality glass - let it come to room temperature first.

Upright, not upside down on an open shelf - resting on the rim for long periods can create stress points. Give stemmed glasses room so they’re not wedged together.
