5 Bar Tools Every Home Bartender Actually Needs
You don't need a 12-piece kit to make real cocktails at home. Five tools cover almost everything.
A jigger
Eyeballing pours is the single biggest reason home cocktails taste inconsistent. A jigger gets your ratios right every time, which matters more than any other tool on this list.
A cocktail shaker
For anything with juice, syrup, egg white, or cream — a shaker properly combines and chills ingredients a stir never could. A simple two-piece Boston shaker or a three-piece cobbler shaker both work.
A bar spoon
Long-handled and twisted, a real bar spoon reaches the bottom of a mixing glass and lets you stir smoothly without splashing. It also doubles as a way to layer ingredients gently, pouring down the spoon's back.
A strainer
A Hawthorn strainer (the one with the spring coil) fits a shaker and holds back ice and pulp. A julep strainer, the perforated spoon-shaped kind, is built for stirred drinks in a mixing glass. Most home bars only need one — a Hawthorn strainer is the more versatile of the two.
A muddler
For anything built with fresh fruit or herbs — a Mojito, an Old Fashioned with a sugar cube, a Whiskey Smash — a muddler releases oils and juice without pulverizing everything into pulp. A light hand goes further than a heavy one.
The actual answer
A jigger, a shaker, a bar spoon, a strainer, and a muddler will make almost anything in a real cocktail book. Everything past that is a nice-to-have, not a need-to-have.
